Where Stone Becomes Sacred

Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities and one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological sites. King Lalibela ordered the construction of 11 churches carved entirely from living rock β€” a feat of devotion and engineering that remains breathtaking nearly 900 years later.

The churches are divided into two groups connected by tunnels and trenches. The most iconic is Bete Giyorgis (Church of St. George), a perfectly cruciform structure descending 15 metres into the earth.

Pilgrims still come from across Ethiopia, especially for the Timkat (Epiphany) and Genna (Christmas) festivals when the churches come alive with chanting priests, white-robed worshippers, and flickering candlelight.
